5 Things Most People Believe About Their CO Detector — And What's Actually True
"After 12 years of HVAC work, I've heard every version of 'we're fine.' Here's what I've learned."

A Quick Note Before We Start
I've been an HVAC tech for 12 years.
In that time I've walked through a lot of homes, checked a lot of appliances, and had a lot of conversations with homeowners about what they think is keeping them safe.
Most people are confident about their detectors. They bought one, they test it, they see the green light. They feel covered.
That confidence is often built on a few assumptions that — once you spend enough time in this field — are worth taking a closer look at.
Here are five of the most common ones.
Myth 1: "The green light means my home is safe."
What's worth knowing: In many standard CO detectors, the green light primarily indicates that the device has power.
Depending on the model, it may not reflect real-time air quality, confirm that the sensor is functioning, or indicate whether anything is present in the air.
The light can look like a signal of safety. In many cases, it's primarily a signal of power.
If you want more visibility into what's in your air, a detector with a real-time display can provide that — showing you an actual reading rather than just a status light.
Myth 2: "I test it every month, so I know it works."
What's worth knowing: In many detectors, the test button is designed to confirm the alarm mechanism — not the sensor itself.
When you press the test button and the detector beeps, it typically confirms that the speaker is functional and the battery has enough charge to produce a sound.
Whether the sensor — the component that detects CO — is still performing as intended is a separate question that the test button may not answer, depending on the model.
Sensors can degrade over time. A detector can pass its button test while the sensor has diminished sensitivity. It's worth checking the manufacturer's guidance on sensor lifespan for your specific model.
Myth 3: "My detector is only a couple of years old, so the sensor is fine."
What's worth knowing: Age is one factor in sensor performance, but not necessarily the only one.
Environmental conditions — humidity levels, dust, and proximity to certain appliances — can also play a role in how a sensor performs over time.
Beyond sensor condition, it's also worth understanding what your detector is designed to respond to.
Many standard detectors are built to meet minimum regulatory thresholds, which means they may stay quiet at lower levels by design.
A newer detector and an older one may behave similarly at those levels.
Myth 4: "My detector covers everything — smoke, CO, gas."
What's worth knowing: Many standard CO detectors are designed specifically to detect carbon monoxide — not natural gas or propane.
These are different threats that typically require different sensors. A standard CO detector may not respond to a natural gas or propane leak, depending on the model.
If you have gas appliances in your home — a stove, water heater, dryer, or furnace — it may be worth checking whether your current detector is designed to detect gas as well, or whether a separate or combination detector would provide broader coverage.
Myth 5: "If something was wrong, the alarm would have gone off."
What's worth knowing: Many standard CO detectors are designed to alarm once levels reach a certain threshold — not at the first sign of presence.
Depending on the model and the applicable safety standards, detectors may be designed to stay quiet at lower levels and only alarm once a higher threshold is reached. Response times can also vary.
This means a detector can be functioning as designed — meeting its regulatory requirements — while levels below its alarm threshold are present.
Whether that level of coverage is sufficient is a question each household can consider based on its own circumstances.
Some people prefer a detector with a real-time display that shows levels continuously, so they can see exactly where things stand rather than waiting for an alarm.
So What Does Actually Knowing Look Like?
After 12 years in this field, I personally replaced the detectors in my own home — not out of concern, but because I wanted more information than a status light could provide.
What I switched to: Haven. Real-time digital display. Live readings for CO, natural gas, and propane.
Designed to provide real-time readings so you can see levels before alarm thresholds are reached.
The display shows a reading you can check at any time. My wife glances at it in the morning.
For us, that level of visibility feels more useful than a light alone.
Haven Is Different

The Short Version
Many standard detectors are designed to show you a status light.
Haven is designed to show you a live reading.
For households that want more visibility into what's in their air, that difference can be worth considering.

"I hadn't thought much about how the test button worked until a friend explained it. In my experience, having a display that shows an actual reading has given me more peace of mind than a light alone ever did." — Jennifer M., Georgia
"Personally, I find that many of my clients benefit from having a detector with a live display. In my experience, the added visibility is something a lot of homeowners appreciate once they understand the difference." — Dan R., Licensed HVAC Technician, Ohio
"My son suggested I look into what the test button actually confirms. For me, being able to glance at a screen and see a reading is simpler and more reassuring than checking a light." — Rachel K., Tennessee
